How to select your training provider…
The internet is full of individuals and small, medium sized and national training organisations, who want to offer you the easy and the perfect solution to your DVSA standards check preparation. My view, from 30 years experience of training and retraining approved driving instructors, who generally work independently, Is why ? would you select a training company/local franchise operator that generally offer very cheap driving lessons in your area etc and would like to put you out of business. Why put your trust into the development or rescue of your personal future and instructional well being !! The thinking instructor selects a specialist independent trainer, who has your personal interest at heart. This may not be the franchise companies, local, regional or national plans to dominate the training sector in your area. Chris Mennell – Masterclass driver training, is a totally independent choice for your personal development for the DVSA ADI STANDARDS CHECK preparation. In the West Midlands, Staffordshire, Shropshire, Worcestershire areas. ADIs can be assured of a professional and confidential service, from a highly qualified and very experienced trainer (over 30 years), who deals with over 600 hundred ADIs for this type of training, and your needs come first. Think about it, we come to you, work to your diary needs (you don’t have to take a day off work to do training, or book a hotel room/plan a long journey) you pay by the hour(an agreed fixed hourly rate) and get a receipt (which you can claim back on your income tax). You will receive a ADI CPD certificate, which you can use as official proof of CPD to the DVSA and no hard sales pressure from us, unlike the franchise operators. Still not sure ? Try me and see for yourself.
Whats ORDIT…
Trainer/Principal & ADI, Chris Mennell-Masterclass driver training-ADI Standards Check Preparation/Recovery/Rescue, was there on the day the official register of driving instructor training was launched at DVSA training centre at Cardington, Bedfordshire. The official training register was introduced to protect the cash paying public and to promote improved standards of driving instructor training and development. The schemes aim was to promote the mind-set of ‘quality not quantity’ and still is. However, the training of as many instructors as possible, putting them on a cheap franchise with very cheap driving lesson price offers, to cheapen the driving instructor profession (and there are lots out there), is not entering into the good spirit of a much needed scheme. What is the DVSA Standards Check…
Chris Mennell – Masterclass Driver Training- ADI Standards Check Preparation/Recovery explains the DVSA standards check requirements to ADIs in the Wombourne, Stourbridge, Wolverhampton, Bilston, Cannock, Stafford, Stoke, West Bromwich, Halesowen, Birmingham, Dudley, Walsall, Wednesbury, Telford, and West Midlands areas.
The law requires all approved driving instructors to take a regular check on their standards of teaching, instructors who do not meet the national required standard, will be removed from the ADI register. The Standards check replaced the ‘check test’ which was the previous method of assessment used from 1970 (and earlier) when the register of approved instructors began.
Under the previous marking system, grades of 1 to 6 were awarded on instructors performance (6 being the top grade) using a bi-polar marking system. This has been replaced with a 17 competency system, with a maximum score making of 3 per section, meaning the highest achievable mark is 51. Grade A status is achieved by scoring 43 or more, grade B status is achieved by scoring 31 to 42, Under 31 is classed as a fail. The 3 and out removal rules still apply to the standards checks. Written notification will be sent by post as regards the standards check invitation, generally 6 weeks notice is given, which is plenty of time for preparation.
The client centred approach…
Chris Mennell-Masterclass driver training-ADI Standards Check-Preparation/Recovery has conducted many training sessions for the ADI Standards Check throughout the West Midlands, Staffordshire, Shropshire and Worcestershire. The main worry given in feedback from ADIs, is the understanding of the client centred approach. These concerns have been increased by media hype, those selling one day training seminars and test centre waiting rooms which are full of chat and misinformation, based on rumour and misunderstanding.
To the surprise of most of our ADI clients, client/person centred learning is nothing new, most instructors have been using this technique for years but don’t realise it. Putting the client first, being considerate of the client, looking after the clients wellbeing, listening the client (and acting upon it) and involving the client, so that training is a two way process (the client has an opinion!!) finding out how the client learns best and that the client gets the maximum from their learning session. Most ADIs have to change the way they communicate to achieve this technique, which can be coached from Chris Mennell-Masterclass driver training – ADI Standards Check Preparation/Recovery.
Coaching…
Chris Mennell-Masterclass driver training-ADI Standards Check Preparation/Recovery encourages all driving instructors, In Wolverhampton, Dudley, Stourbridge, Cannock, Walsall, Stafford, Kidderminster, Worcester, Birmingham, West Bromwich, Redditch, Telford, Shrewsbury and all areas in-between to use well structured coaching techniques to encourage client involvement and the client centred approach.
The use of question and answer technique has always been associated as a skill that is used by the instructor only, (on the move, fault prevention, validation, transfer of responsibility etc). However, clients should also be encouraged to ask questions, to make learning a two way process. Instructors need to be very skilful with the use of questions and not create pressure on the client, questions encourage thinking and client participation and well being. We have a wide range of training modules on this technique.
Mind mapping…
Chris Mennell-Masterclass driver training-ADI Standards Check Preparation/Recovery has developed the mind mapping technique with driving instructors in places like Dudley, Wolverhampton, Stourbridge, Kidderminster, Malvern, Welshpool, Newton, Newport, Bridgnorth, Ludlow, Redditch, Bromsgrove, Coventry, Warwick, Tamworth, who have found and understood the benefits of making the client think more for themselves.
Again as above, mind mapping is not something new, the old style briefings give information but don’t involve the client to maximum effect, whereas a mind map creates interest, thinking and client participation and is knowledge based. A mind map starts with a centre point (subject start), then branches off to create knowledge, thinking, interest and client involvement and stimulation, it can be used in any development or reflection situation. An in car lesson mind map (picture), should be offered to the client to take home, to encourage reflection away from the lesson environment.
Scaling…
Chris Mennell- Masterclass driver training-ADI standards Check Preparation/Recovery, encourages the use of a reflection card at the start and end of every training session, with approved driving instructors in areas like, Redditch, Bromsgrove, Shrewsbury, West Bromwich, Wednesbury, Halesowen and Birmingham. Scaling encourages clients to offer their opinion on their performance, knowledge, level of improvement during training, it encourages client targets and achievements. Scaling can take many different formats, not just “how many out of ten?” A reflection card records client’s thoughts and options to develop and set learning targets (not the instructors’ opinion). Training and development sessions will encourage the use of this system.
Freeze Frames…
Chris Mennell-Masterclass driver training-ADI Standards Check Preparation/Recovery, has developed the freeze frame concept, to encourage client thinking, planning and reading the road scene ahead and problem solving (the cognitive reaction) for ADIs in, Cannock, Walsall, Stafford, Stoke, Lichfield, Stone, Featherstone, Perton, Willenhall, Bilston and Wednesfield. Not all clients respond to long kerb side briefings or too heavy, high tempo, on the move coaching/instruction, (the instructor doesn’t give the client the choice !). Client thinking and development/involvement needs to be nurtured in different ways, which suit the clients preferred learning environment and enjoyment of learning, which produce the best client results. A freeze frame is an ideal way of promoting this, parking and discussing the scene ahead in a variety of locations encourages thinking, involvement, without the pressure of driving the moving vehicle. Training and development with Chris Mennell-Masterclass Driver Training-ADI Standards Check Preparation/Recovery will develop your personal profile with this technique.
Reflection…
Chris Mennell-Masterclass driver training-ADI Standards Check Preparation/Recovery encourages time for reflection of all training, development, personal performance of both instructor and client. The understanding that serious reflection adds a new dimension to personal development of instructors in Wolverhampton, Dudley, Stourbridge, Birmingham, West Bromwich, Walsall, Cannock, Stafford, Stoke, Telford, Shrewsbury, Kidderminster, Worcester, and all surrounding areas. Reflection gives time to think and learn from successes and mistakes, with the opportunity for client and self-improvement. A reflection log will be encouraged, to record thoughts and changes to be personally made to offering the client centred approach to learning and development. Clients should also be encouraged to keep a reflection log or equivalent to record their feelings and be happy and comfortable to discuss with you their trainer and mentor. The reflection card should be used when necessary to encourage client opinion and develop client confidence to self-assess themselves. Clients should not be put under pressure to mark themselves higher than they are happy scale themselves. Full training and development is available from Chris Mennell-Masterclass driver training- ADI Standards Check preparation/Recovery/Rescue.
